Michael Collins devoted his life to the cause of Irish freedom and ultimately, gave his life for that cause. While his life was cruelly cut short at the age of 31, his legacy lingers on as one of the founding fathers of the modern Irish state. The intense outpouring of sympathy by those who knew him that greeted his death highlights the impact he had on those with whom he was personally acquainted, while the continued reverence and regard in which he is today showcases his enduring influence.

‘What made Ireland a nation was a common way of life, which no military force, no political change could destroy. Our strength lay in a common ideal of a how a people should live, bound together by mutual ties and by a devotion to Ireland which shrank from no individual sacrifice. This consciousness of unity carried us to success in our last struggle.’

– Michael Collins, August 1922
