Birthplace of Michael Collins

Michael Collins was born here at Woodfield on October 16th 1890. It is alleged the Collins' family had farmed the land here for seven generations. Michael Collins snr. who lived in the house here with his two brother married Marianne O'Brien who live just around the corner at Sams Cross. The couple had eight children of whom Michael was the youngest.


Michael was born in the small cottage which remains standing at the back of the site. A larger two story dwelling house was built on the site in the late 1890's. This house was later occupied by Michaels brother Seán (Johnny) and his family. During the Irish War of Independence this house was targeted and burned by the Essex Regiment of the British Army. As a result only the foundations remain.
